Synthetic motor oil isn't an expensive scam put on by greedy repair shops, says AAA. According to nationwide surveys, 44 percent of U.S. drivers don't believe synthetic oil is beneficial, many citing suspicion that it's just another way for service centers to squeeze them for more money.

Yet AAA's recent findings show synthetic oil really is superior, and those findings are reflected in the majority of service professionals who use synthetic oil themselves—83 percent!

Why is synthetic oil better than conventional oil?

Oil must perform consistently in high-shear environments, where moving engine parts would rub directly against each other if not for a film of oil. Oil is also responsible for keeping the engine clear of sludge deposits, and for maintaining its flow and viscosity in both high and freezing temperatures. AAA testing found synthetic oils to perform 47 percent better on average in eight tests of these properties.

Says John Nielsen, AAA’s managing director of Automotive Engineering and Repair:

"It’s understandable that drivers may be skeptical of any service that is nearly twice the cost of the alternative. While a manufacturer-approved conventional oil will not harm a vehicle’s engine, the extra $30 per oil change could actually save money in the long run by protecting critical engine components over time."
